Is there finally a Google search for internal enterprise knowledge … but from Open Eye? It certainly seems that way.
Today, it’s open Started company knowledge in Chat GPTa major new capability for users of ChatGPT’s paid Business, Enterprise, and EDU plans that allows them to call their company’s data directly from third-party workplace apps, including Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, Gmail, Github, HubSpot, and integrate it into ChatGPT results.
As Fedji Simu, CEO of Openai’s Applications, put it in a post on Social Network X: "It brings all the context from your apps (Slack, Google Drive, GitHub, etc.) into ChatGPT so you can get answers that are specific to your business."
Surprisingly, the feature in Openai’s blog post states that "Powered by a version of GPT-5 that is trained to look at multiple sources to give more comprehensive and accurate answers," What looks to me like a new fine-tuned version of the company’s model family released in August, although there are no additional details on how it was trained.
After all, company knowledge in ChatGPT is evolving globally and is designed to make ChatGPT a central point of access to verified organizational information supported by secure integration and enterprise-grade compliance controls, and to provide employees with fast access to their company information while at work.
Now, instead of toggling through Slack to find the assignments and instructions you’ve been given, or tabbing through Google Drive and opening specific files you need to call up, ChatGPT can deliver all of that information directly into your chat session — if your company enables the appropriate connections.
Openai as Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap It is written in a post on social network X: "Knowledge of the company has changed the way I use ChatGPT at work more than anything else I’ve ever built – let us know what you think!"
These third-party app connectors were rolled out in August 2025, though they were only for individual users on Chat GPT Plus plans.
Integrating ChatGPT with Workplace Systems
Enterprise teams often face the challenge of data fragmented across various internal tools – email, chat, file storage, project management, and customer platforms.
The company’s knowledge bridges these silos by enabling ChatGPT to integrate with approved systems and other supporting apps through enterprise-managed connections.
Each response created with Company Knowledge includes references and direct links to original sources, allowing teams to verify where specific details originated. This transparency helps organizations maintain data trust while increasing productivity.
Openi has confirmed that the company uses a version of Knowledge GPT5 optimized for multi-source reasoning and cross-system synthesis, providing detailed, contextually accurate results even across disparate sources.
Built for enterprise control and security
The company’s knowledge of enterprise governance and compliance was developed from the ground up. It respects existing permissions within connected apps – ChatGPT can only access what the user is already authorized to see – and never trains on company data by default.
Security features include industry-standard encryption, support for SSO and SCIM for account provisioning, and permission to restrict access to approved corporate networks by IP.
Enterprise administrators can also define role-based access control (RBAC) policies and manage permissions at a group or department level.
OpenAI’s Enterprise Compliance API provides a complete audit trail, allowing administrators to review conversation logs for reporting and regulatory purposes.
This capability helps businesses meet internal governance standards and industry-specific requirements such as SOC2 and ISO 27001 compliance.
Admin configuration and connector management
For enterprise deployments, administrators must enable Company Knowledge and its connectors in the ChatGPT workspace. Once the connector is enabled, users can authenticate their accounts for each work app they need to access.
In Enterprise and EDU plans, connectors are predefined and require explicit admin approval before employees can use them. Admins can selectively enable the connector, manage access by role, and require SSO-based authentication for finer control.
Business plan users, in contrast, have connectors automatically enabled if they are available in their workspace. Administrators can still monitor that connectors are approved, ensuring alignment with internal IT and data policies.
Company knowledge becomes available to any user with at least one active connector, and admins can configure group-level permissions for different teams—such as limiting access to GitHub to engineering while enabling Google Drive or HubSpot to marketing and sales.
How company knowledge works in practice
Activating company knowledge is straightforward. Users can start a new or existing conversation in ChatGPT and select “Company Knowledge” under Message Composer or from the Tools menu.
After authenticating their connected apps, they can ask routine questions — like “summarize this account’s latest views and risks” or “compile Q4 performance summary from Project Tracker.”
ChatGPT searches across linked tools, retrieves relevant context, and generates a response with full references and source links.
The system can combine data across apps to create a cohesive view of a project, client, or initiative—for example, to merge Slack updates, Google Docs notes, and HubSpot CRM records.
When Company Knowledge is not selected, ChatGPT may still use contacts in a limited capacity as part of the default experience, but responses will not include detailed references or multi-source synthesis.
Advanced use cases for enterprise teams
For development and operations leaders, company knowledge can serve as a central intelligence layer that layers real-time updates and dependencies across complex workflows. ChatGPT, for example, can summarize open GitHub pull requests, highlight unresolved linear tickets, and cross-reference Slack engineering discussions in a single output.
Technical teams can also use it for incident recovery or release planning by pulling relevant information from release trackers, logs and meeting notes. Purchasing or finance leaders can use it to consolidate purchase requests or budget updates into joint drives and internal communications.
Because the model can reference structured and unstructured data simultaneously, it supports a wide range of scenarios.
Privacy, data residency and compliance
Enterprise data protection is a central design element of company knowledge. ChatGPT processes data in accordance with Openai’s enterprise-grade security model, ensuring that no connected app data leaves the secure confines of an organization’s authorized environment.
Data residency policies vary by connector. Some integrations, such as Slack, support region-specific data storage, while others—such as Google Drive and SharePoint—are available for users based in the US with or without a REST data residency. Organizations with regional compliance responsibilities can review the connector’s security documentation for details.
No geo restrictions apply to company knowledge, making it suitable for multinational organizations that operate across multiple jurisdictions.
Limitations and future enhancements
Currently, users must manually enable Company Knowledge in each new Chat GPT conversation.
OpenAI is developing a unified interface that will automatically integrate company knowledge with other ChatGPT tools — such as browsing and chart generation — so users won’t need to toggle between methods.
When enabled, the company’s knowledge temporarily disables web browsing and visual output generation, although users can change methods in the same conversation to re-enable these features.
Openai also continues to expand its network of supporting tools. Recent updates have added connectors for Asana, GitLab issues, and ClickUp, and Openai plans to support a future MCP (Model Context Protocol) connector to enable custom, developer-built integrations.
Several important details about Company knowledge Be unbiased based on Openei’s published content. It’s not yet known whether the system can detect and exclude encrypted information, whether organizations can separately opt-in or out of data training for the feature, or if users will eventually be able to choose which model powers it.
OpenAI also hasn’t said whether this version of GPT5 is new or specific to the feature, or what service-level guarantees are in place to ensure accuracy and prevent deception in the company’s specific response. VentureBeat has emailed an Openai spokesperson with these and related questions and is awaiting a response, which we will publish if and when we receive it.
Availability and launch
Company Knowledge is now available to all ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and EDU users. Organizations can start by activating the feature under the Chat GPT Message Composer and integrating approved work apps.
For enterprise rollouts, OpenAI recommends a phased deployment: first activating core connectors (such as Google Drive and Slack), configuring RBAC and SSO, then expanding to specialized systems after validating data access policies.
Procurement and security leaders should note in evaluating the feature that the company’s knowledge is incorporated under existing ChatGPT Enterprise Terms and uses the same encryption, compliance, and service level guarantees.
With the company’s know-how, Openei aims to make ChatGPT not just a conversational assistant, but an intelligent interface to enterprise data.
