Ai in Art competitions AI: Fear or wisdom? | By W. AQLI | May, 2025

Recently, I made an announcement for a visual art competition organized by a famous institution. Everything looked interesting – theme, rewards, judges’ panels. But my eyes were attracted to a small line at the bottom of the technical requirements: “Regulations should not be created using AI (artificial intelligence).”

This type of rule is not new. Over the past one year, more and more art competitions have included similar restrictions. The reason for this is clear: Protecting the authenticity of art works, stopping the harassment, and making sure that each piece really comes from human creative processes. But then, a big question arose: Does this mean that AI should be completely excluded from the artistic process?

Many people consider AI a threat to art. This technology can produce photos, music and even poetry in seconds. Therefore, it is natural that some of the troubles will lose their “action”. This is proof of the maker’s hands, intuitive or emotional struggle.

AI also raises the risk of imitating existing styles without permission or proper context. In addition, add the ridiculous waters of copyright ownership, and it is easy to see why some organizers are taking a strong stand: it is better to ban AI completely than unfair entries.

Looking back, the history of art is full of new technologies that were initially feared. Photography, computer graphics, even digital drawing tablets – once seen as a threat to “true” art. And still today, they are completely embraced.

AI can be seen in the same light. This is not just a soul copier. It can be a helpful tool that, when used wisely, reinforces the process of Idea development. For example, during the early brain storms, OI references offer, by detecting different visual styles, or even producing the narrative narrative can help artists.

The key is: The final result should still come from the artist. Ai can give rise to ideas, but he should never replace the hands, ideas and heart behind the artwork.

Of course, integrity is important in art competitions. But the only technical restrictions are not the answer. There is more education than when and how education can be used morally. Without it, we are at risk of cultivating fear rather than understanding.

Young artists should learn that the use of AI does not mean to deceive the creative process. On the contrary, when kept in the right context, the AI can become a stimulus for the exploration, not the shortcut of expression.

Human creativity cannot be fully outsourced. But that does not mean that we have to reject all the tools. Like paint brushes, canvas, or digital devices, AI is a medium, not monster.

Perhaps now, there are not many open spaces to discuss it. But we can start with a simple question: If AI is not used to make the final artwork, but only Ignorant First spark?

To discover this topic more? I selected reading and resources to continue to talk about the future of AI and creativity:
