Openai extended it Data Residence Areas For ChatGPT and its API, the option is to give enterprise users the option to store and process their data closer to their business operations and better comply with local regulations. This extension removes one of the biggest compliance blockers preventing global enterprises from deploying ChatGPT at scale.
Data Residencean often overlooked piece of the enterprise AI puzzle, processes data according to the laws and customs of the countries where it is stored.
Chat GPT Enterprise and EDU users can now choose to process their data:

Users can store data such as conversations, uploaded files, custom GPTS, and image generation samples. This only applies to data at rest, not when it moves through a system or when it is used for estimation. Openai’s Documents Note that, for now, Estimated Accommodation is only available in the US
ChatGPT Enterprise and EDU users can set up new workspaces with data residency. Enterprise users can enable data residency by creating a new project and selecting their preferred region on an approved API for advanced data controls.
Openai was the first to offer data residency in Europe February this year. The European Union has some strict global data rules based on the GDPR.
Importance of data habitat
Until now, enterprises had few choices for processing data flows through ChatGPT. For example, some organizational data will be processed under US law rather than European law.
Enterprises risk violating data compliance rules if their data is processed elsewhere and does not meet strict policies.
“With more than one million business customers around the world using OpenAI directly, we’ve expanded where we offer data residency,” the company said in its blog post.
However, businesses should also understand that if they are using connectors or integrations within ChatGPT, these applications have different data residency rules. When Openai launched Company Knowledge for Chat GPTit warned users that depending on the connector they use, data residency may be limited to the US.
