When the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 launched, there were plenty of changes to compliment the company’s widely upgraded device and a great foldable phone. But its arrival also changed something else – the impression of people’s rival foldables, which was claiming to be the thinner of the two.
Earlier in July, Honor Magic V5 launched, and announced that it was the world’s thin foldable phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 was then launched at the end of the month, officially measured slightly and thus the honor was allowed to maintain the title.
But then, users like the tech -leaker Ice universe They put their hands on both phones and started measurement. And they get different numbers in the published persons, the numbers that prove the galaxy Z Fold 7 is actually a slim phone.
An attempt is being made to re -perform his claim with honor, and Samsung has happily admitted that he mistakenly made the world’s thin foldable phone phone, it is difficult to know what to believe.
So in the interest of trying to resolve the issue, I have talked to both honors and Samsung, and have taken my own sample of both phones in question.
A measured response
As a baseline, let’s look at the official claims of thickness of these two phones when it is added. The revealed measurements are not under dispute here, and are less important anyway because you will not take you foldable by opening the majority of the time.
Also note that this measurement, especially the ivory revolves around the white magic V5. Other colors of the magic V5 are caused by a slightly different panel designs.

Compare them to The measurement of the ice universe In the same table: The magic V5 is 0.15 mm thick according to its caliphas, while the Galaxy Z fold is thin from 0.11 mm claims. Obviously, there is something wrong here, and the honor was in a hurry to respond with potential specifications.
As part of his statement to me and other take -outlets, the Honor noted that large -scale products such as smartphones can also have small manufacturing variations. But this is not a unique issue for honor, and can work against it as well.
So let’s look at two other reasons why the official number and the ice universe cannot be similar.
First, the official measurement of the honor comes from the magic V5 device that does not have a screen protector. Magic V5, like all Honor phones, ship with a pre -used plastic film on its outer screen. This courtesy honor the loss of thickness compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is not a pre -used protector. IU’s pictures are difficult to see if there is a screen protector in the magic V5, but I made sure to remove the film from my device before the measurement.
The second problem is the exact way in which the honor measures it. The documents I have seen include keeping the calippers from the Hung Side to cover the honor’s logo and adding “proper thumb pressure” to the bottom jaw to cover the honor logo.
I do not know that there has been a secret advantage by measuring this location, but it is certainly helpful to have a good flat canvas to capture the Calepers. What is more confused is how the photo honors have published about their lab testing, this method does not use this method.
So keeping in mind these facts, I measured. I would state that my calippers, while well -known brand IFIXIT, are probably not as accurate as more expensive models, such as phone companies such as honors use to measure their official sugars.
However, from other measurements I made with these calories, I believe they are at least 99 % accurate, and are able to show the size difference between our two foldables.

I measured two phones from the procedure given by honor – this is just fair, finally. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 does not have the logo in the rear to help decide its mid -point, but I look at the same kind of height and the width of the magic V5, I bestowed it.

My number is 0.08 mm from Samsung’s official data, and is 0.5 mm off for this honor, with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 slim phone.
I don’t know what “appropriate thumb pressure” means in the statement of the honor, but this is an important detail. Pressing on the calippers allows you to get a small measure because you are measured by the item that you are measuring a bit of flakes, which applies more and more with foldable phones as two parts of the phone are also occupied, which can be strictly strict.
Official images of Honor’s shaped test show the calippers under pressure, as well as a hand from the bottom of the ruler’s section. But seeing that the Calepers can be locked in place with a small screw in the upper part of the display, we will not definitely know if there is a squeeze or not already photos.
The disturbing thing is, I have no way to measure or double check how much power I have on the calippers to get the following measurements. Here, we eventually target 8.8 mm data of Honor’s promise, in fact, with the last minute of the last minute, the promised personality (though sadly, the camera) passes through. But whatever events can now plan to be honored, it will be shortened, as doing the same on Samsung, it once again makes a sleek, which is a complete 0.3 mm thin from government sugars and a magic V5 to 0.18 mm thin.
As we have already discussed, these results can be purely due to the construction of the Magic Magic V5 unit that I had, but I suspect that if it happened to both me and the ice universe, it would be with many other people.
Before removing the phones, I contacted Samsung, both of them for their stand on this situation and for its devices for its official measurement standards, so we can also compare both foldable size on its terms. The company refused to comment.

Apparently, despite the final evidence that the magic V5 is not actually the most thin folding phone of the book -style, it seems that the honor is based on its guns and its official measurement. But now that I have seen the evidence for myself that this claim is either wrong or comes with big warnings, I do not know why Honor is trying to try such a power.
The thinness of a device is an impressive and easy -to -number, so I know why all kinds of companies like to talk about it in their marketing. But we’re talking about the difference of about 40 40 micrometers – literally a two -haired thickness.
In addition, there is more that the honor can sell the magic V5 to the people who are out of the thin. For example, V5’s high -rise 50MP main and ultra -wide camera, its 64 MP3X telephoto camera, has a large battery of 5,580 mA or sharp 66W wired and 50W wireless charging standards. And if we are talking about the dealers, the fact is that the honor is not sold in countries like the United States, it causes more trouble with the potential misconception.
When we approach the global launch of the magic V5, and we get closer to being able to be fully reviewed on the phone, my expectation is not less than that is slightly larger than Samsung.
Unless the honor makes any other uncertainty about the magic V5 capabilities, it is still an opportunity to make a great foldable phone, and in ways that rival phone maker cannot imitate or improve immediately.
