Apple is positioning India as an alternative manufacturing base for China as a trade war between Washington and Beijing has erupted, with US President Donald Trump threatening obstacles to China under more than 100 % tax on China and increasing iPhone prices.

The Trump administration has so far rescued China’s electronics from revenue, but Washington has indicated that there may be some levies in the coming weeks.

A source said that a new Tata electronics plant in Hosur in Tamil Nadu state of southern India has recently begun to create an old iPhone model on an assembly line.

According to four sources, including a government official, another 6 2.6 billion plant under Taiwan’s Foxkan in Bangalore, Karnataka, is under construction.

One source said that 300-500 iPhone units per hour could be built in the factory, where according to the other, the iPhone 16 and 16 e-E-E-Models would be manufactured. It is expected that when the construction is completely complete, 50,000 jobs will be created in full potential, which will be expected by December 2027.

Tata declined to comment, while Apple and Foxkin did not immediately respond to comment requests.

Research firm Counterpoint estimates that China is more than 75 % of the global iPhone production, while India contributes to about 18 %. According to Reuters, Apple is taking immediate steps to transfer the production of most US -selling iPhones to factories in India by the end of 2026.

Apple has accelerated production in recent weeks to defeat US prices in India, sending 600 tonnes of iPhones worth $ 2 billion (about Rs 16, 900 crore) in March, which is a monthly record for both Tata and Foxkin, which is later calculated only 1.3 billion for smartphones (Rs 10,987).

Apple’s relatively new new supplier, Tata has rapidly emerged as an important Indian contractor. With new facilities, Foxkin and Tata will work together with a total of five iPhone factories from India.
