Jane had always been drawn to the quiet spaces between things—the pause between breaths, the flash before a memory, the faint warmth that lingers after someone leaves a room. He called these thresholds the curtainsand he devoted his life’s work to them. As the keeper of the veil, she was passing through the world to see what is not what it appears, but what is gently pressing behind it.

His practice began with listening. In the evenings she would sit in abandoned gardens, forgotten steps, or crowded markets, and she would wait until the unseen began to speak. People often mistake her stillness for idleness, but inside Jane there was always movement: shifting memories, muted colors brushing each other, whispers threading themselves into shapes.

His work was delicate. Whenever a person suddenly lost a memory—whether through grief, trauma, or the general erosion of time—Jane felt it slip through the cracks. She would collect these spinning pieces before they completely disintegrated. Some arrived as hotheads. Others drifted away like a pale blur. Some carried the emotional gravity of an entire life in a single pulse. He held them briefly, just long enough to get them in sync, and then he led them home.

One evening, a particularly heavy memory found him. It shuddered like a wounded animal, emitting a dim glow. As Jane held her gently, she felt both grief and gratitude build in her veins. Instead of resisting, he exhaled slowly, allowing the memory to steady itself in his hands. It settled, warmed, and slowly retreated to its rightful owner—someone hoping to remember, yet afraid of what the return might mean.

Jane saw him cross the veil, soft and bright. The world moved by a part, restored in a way only he could know. And in this subtle revival, he felt his purpose confirmed.

My name is Jane.
