The caveman Why use so many tokens when only a few will work?

by SkillAiNest

Julius teaches Claude to talk like a caveman. 24.9K stars later, this is the most useful meme in developer tooling.

Problem: LLMs are literal by default. Phrases like “I’d be happy to help you with that” and “Let me summarize what I just did” deliver nothing—but tokens, slow responses, and quickly push you to the limits of usability.

Solution: Caveman skips clearing Claude’s throat and goes straight to the answer. same fine. 75% less words. The brain is still big.

What stands out:
🪨 ~75% output token reduction: benchmark average 65%, range 22–87% in real coding tasks
⚡ ~3x faster responses: less tokens to generate = speed go brrr
🎚️ Four intensity levels: Light, Full, Ultra, and 文言文 (classical Chinese) mode
📝 Caveman-commit: Terse commit messages, ≤50 char threads, why more?
🔍 Caveman-review: One-line PR Comments: L42: 🔴 Bug: user null. Add a guard.
🗜️ Caveman-compress: Rewrites your CLAUDE.md In caveman-speak, by cutting ~46% of input tokens per session
🔌 Works everywhere: Claude Codex, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, Windsurf, Cline, Copilot, and 40+ more
🆓 Free, MIT, one-line install

Before and after:
🗣️ Normal Cloud (69 tokens): “The reason your React component is re-rendering is because you’re creating a new object reference on each render cycle…”
🪨 Caveman Cloud (19 tokens): “New object ref every render. Inline object prop = new ref = rerender. Wrap in UseMemo.”

Note: Works best for coding tasks. Critical responses still require a full cloud, and system prompts are loaded as input tokens, so net savings vary per use case.

A March 2026 paper found that brevity constraints improved accuracy by 26 percentage points on certain criteria. Action is not always better.
