Threads has just added live chats.and the implementation is more structured than it appears on the surface.
what is it: Live Chats is a public group chat feature on Threads, designed to run during cultural events such as live sports games or album drops.
Most social feeds are bad during live events. Posts scroll past, responses are scattered, and there’s no coherent group conversation with what you’re seeing. Threads Live Chats are specifically designed to make this difference, with chats anchored to a scheduled event, not just a trending topic.
What makes it different from standard group chats?: These are public and discoverable, hosted by creators or community champions, and built with live event tooling. Real-time polls, typing indicators, countdowns, and live game scores keep the chat in sync with what’s actually happening. If the chat gets full, you can still view, react and vote.
Hosts can schedule a chat, give it a name, set start and end times, and share it to their Threads feed and Instagram Story. This cross-level division is actually useful for getting people in the same room at the same time.
Key Features:
Public group chats are discoverable in community feeds.
Real-time polls, countdowns, typing hints, and live scores
Profile color indicator when the host is live
Scheduled with cross-posting on Instagram Stories
